Signs That Your Tires Should Be Replaced

Automotive Blog

There are multiple reasons that you may need new tires for your car or truck. The tires could be worn out due to weather exposure, age, or the abrasiveness of rugged surfaces. Regardless of the reason that a tire needs to be replaced, it is important to replace it in a timely manner to avoid safety issues as you drive. Here are a few signs that your tires need to be replaced, so you can purchase new ones when needed:

Worn Tread

If you drive a vehicle, the tires will eventually wear out. The rubber treads that help the tires grip the road are worn away by the friction or abrasiveness that the tire experiences as it rolls against the ground. The tread may wear away even more quickly if the road or asphalt is hot or has an uneven surface.

You can check the tread condition by inserting a penny head-first into the grooves of your tread. If there is sufficient tread for safe driving, a portion of Lincoln's head will still be covered. However, if it's time to replace your tires due to tread wear, the top of Lincoln's head will be visible with the coin inserted.

Age

If your tires are more than a few years old, the rubber may start to become rigid from exposure to ultraviolet light and adverse weather. Many tire manufacturers have a suggested period for tire replacement. You can review the recommendations for your tires to determine whether or not the tires need immediate replacement.

Visible Deterioration

In addition to tread wear, other signs of tire deterioration sometimes occur. If your tires are long overdue for replacement, metal wires around the perimeter of the tires may even be exposed. Also, tread may seem inconsistent.

Changes in Tire Pressure

If your tire pressure seems to decline regularly, there may be damage causing a slow leak. Replacing the tire instead of trying to plug the damage may be the best option, since the tire's structure may no longer be uniform after a plug's application.

Vibrations While Driving

Sometimes, worn tires produce vibrations during driving. The shaking sensation may seem to come from beneath the seats of the vehicle. Often, the vibrations are caused by variations in tread wear.

If you believe that one or more of your tires need to be replaced, visit a tire dealer in your area. The dealer may have new and used tires available for purchase.
